Sunrise Walk to Bempton Cliffs - 13th December 2020

Cliff Lane, Bempton

I hadn't expected much of a morning but was pleased at how it turned out! A glorious reddy pink pre-sunrise had me dashing (probably more like slow plodding) towards the cliffs! Cliff Lane, Bempton was truly spectacular...

Looking at my watch, it was 0750hrs and actual sunrise was at 0813hrs. It promised to be something special so again I increased my speed (to just above a plod) in order to witness the event from Bartlett Nab. Here the disappointment began. Cloud and light mist had increased over Flamborough Head reducing the sunrise to a bit of a damp squib...

Another problem with dull light is camera ISO is high, images tend to blur, more so when wildlife is distant.

On and around the cliffs today, a Barn Owl and a Short eared Owl hunted fields on separate sides of the visitor centre; thousands of Guillemots were still on the ledges, in flight and on the sea; Fulmars displayed well and hundreds of Pink Footed Geese were in the field bordering the RSPB reserve at the top of Cliff Lane.

Certainly the early morning was the best part of the day, as I write this blog page light rain has started to fall and the temperature feels raw!

Please stay safe out there.
