Bempton Circular Walk - 26th June 2020

Kittiwake

A very early start to my walk this morning enabled me to capture the spectacular sunrise over Bempton. Images can be seen at the end of this post. Even at 0430hrs it was warm and two hours later I was happy to be at home chilling! Bempton Cliffs are getting busy now, even early in the morning. I have been able to avoid close contact with people but the problem of "unsocial hoggers", where photographers stake claim to the best areas of a viewpoint, and obviously plan to remain for a long time, is getting a tad annoying. I dread the arrival of July 4th when I think the "flood gates" will open - a time for me to go elsewhere, maybe? I must say I enjoy the more "off piste" areas!

  1. Hello Kevin - excellent photos as always.
Im afraid I will be one of those descending on Bempton as I will visit family in the area from 6th July for a few days. I will heed your advice and try and do my Bempton birding very early though.
I'd be interested to know where else you recommend in the area that may be quieter although can understand that you don't want everyone to know.

Keep up the blog anyway - very enjoyable.

  2. Hi Richard thank you for your comments. Bempton and Flamborough are very busy but if you are not at risk and socially distance there should be no problems. At Bempton, as you will know, the viewpoints are the pinch points combined with narrow paths. A bit like hides with no coverings and people do come close. Flamborough is more open. The areas I am looking at are predominantly arable farmland and probably very boring! Enjoy your time here.

  3. Brilliant photos as usual. I was there Thursday and a see what you mean about people hogging the best spots, people going the wrong way on paths when they are clearly marked out. I've been shielding for the last 14 weeks due to me having lung desease I was struggling to keep my distance from anyone. It will be the last visit there till the virus as been totally eradicated

  4. Yes, it is a problem and some don't realise the issues others have. I will not go within 2mtrs of another person and around the open spaces on the reserve, this can be achieved. The viewpoints, however, are a pinch point, a bit like an uncovered bird hide. Thus, maintaining 2mtrs means not seeing the better parts of the cliff ledges if someone is hogging. They can get very rude if asked to move!
