Exercise Walks in May 2020

Meadow Pipit

Nature carries on during human lockdown and so much can be seen during permitted exercise walks. I consider myself extremely lucky to have a fantastic local birding patch on my doorstep and I hope you will enjoy sharing the wildlife I encounter, even if you cannot be physically present.

One of the best birds (for me) being seen at the moment is the Grey Partridge! Two birds are roaming the Cliff Lane area of Bempton, giving entertainment in finding them!

On the cliffs, Kittiwakes and Gannets continue in ragging the cliff top vegetation for nesting material. Today, it was the turn of this Herring Gull.

Large numbers of Auks are spending time in rafts on the sea rather than on the cliff ledges. However all three continue to be seen in varying numbers.

Razorbills enjoying a "cloacal kiss", while Guillemots look on!

Two new Gannet pairs (first time breeders) have taken up residence near Bartlett Nab. Here two of them confront their neighbours!

Do you come here often?

Allopreening or social preening, usually between two mated birds, can be observed. It tends to reinforce their bond and can precede mating. It is also believed that by undertaking allopreening, birds are able to gauge the health of each other. If a partner is deemed unwell or injured during the breeding season, the fitter of the two will undertake most of the support work, feeding and hunting, until recovery occurs.

Not exactly "Monarch of the Glen" but Roe Deer are always a pleasure to see

As are Brown Hares, especially when at speed!

For some reason, I am attracted to Dandelion "clocks". Keep it quiet, please!

Please remember to stay safe if exercising and to follow current government instructions.

All visitor facilities at Bempton Cliffs are closed.
