Exercise Walks in May 2020

Song Thrush with breakfast

A glorious morning and already very warm when I set out at 0530hrs! Blue sky, sunshine and only a breath of wind. A great day ahead.

It was good to see one of the local Song Thrushes dissecting and collecting up pieces of worm for its young. Later in my walk, I was able to view, from a distance, a Mistle Thrush feeding its young at the nest. Fantastic success here!

Walking up to the cliffs plenty of Buntings, Finches, Larks and Pipits sang out the best being Corn Bunting, Sedge Warbler and Willow Warbler.

On the cliffs, all of the breeding seabirds were in action but Fulmars and Puffins were hard to find.

It was good to see a good number of Kittiwakes now with eggs...

Many Kittiwakes are still engaged in collecting mud and vegetation for their nests, while others are still engaging in cloacal kissing!...

I'm still rather worried about the small number of Auks eggs being seen (or rather not being seen). The number of visible predated eggs are numerous, but those where they should be are not. I hope I'm wrong and that they are just late, time will tell. Predation of eggs by Herring Gulls and Corvids is usual, but the birds themselves can dislodge eggs. Here, a Razorbill crash lands to clos to another that is on an egg. The brooding Razorbill fights the intruder, placing the egg at risk. Thankfully, the egg remains safe!...
