Thornwick Pools, Flamborough - 3rd July 2023

Little Ringed Plover

Symphony was due at the groomers in Flamborough so I took the opportunity to visit Thornwick Pools. The weather deteriorated from bright and sunny to cloudy with some heavy showers. The strong south westerly did its best to chill. A pleasant couple of hours watching the pools and chatting to Andrew Lassey, always enlightening!

Best birds were two Curlew, two Little Ringed Plovers, one Little Egret, one Grey Heron, one Oystercatcher keeping company with Moorhens, Coots, Mallards, numerous passerines coming in to drink and bathe and feeding hirundines. After I had left, I learned that a Great White Egret had dropped in.

When the Little Egret dropped in, the male and female Little Ringed Plovers engaged in their distraction techniques, attempting to draw the Egret away from their nest. The Egret ignored their actions and continued its walk around the pool!
