Bempton Cliffs Walk (Seabirds) - 20th July 2023

Kittiwake

A walk along Bempton Cliffs this morning in mild, but bright conditions and increasing cloud cover. It is very noticeable that the breeding Auks (Puffins, Guillemots & Razorbills) are in reduced numbers now. Most of the Auks still on the cliffs are probably non-breeding birds or females, the males look after the chicks (Jumplings) on their journey out to sea. Puffins can still be seen but I have a saying "When the school holidays start, the Puffins depart!".

Sadly avian flu is again taking it's toll of seabirds, in particular Kittiwakes and you WILL see dead birds, some at close quarters. Do not touch any dead birds.

Guillemots

This pair still have a chick, but well hidden!
