RSPB Bempton Cliffs - 22nd August 2021

Tawny Owl

Well it is now Autumn in nature and the weather today was again one of sea fret, brief sunny periods, but quite humid. The hoped for "fall" of birds didn't really occur but Highlights for me, were two year ticks in Tawny Owl and Yellow Wagtail! On the cliffs, Gannets are dominating, Fulmars, Herring Gulls and Shags are also showing well. Kittiwake numbers have again reduced. The Black Browed Albatross is still present and showed well in its frequent flights around Staple Newk. Two winter plumages Guillemots were on the sea and a Puffin was again spotted bringing in sand eels/fish to the cliffs at Staple Newk. At least one peregrine also put on an excellent display around the reserve .

Surprise of the day was the discovery of a Tawny Owl, in a Hawthorn, in Bempton dell by TC, alerted by the alarm calls of Blackbirds!

The Fulmar chick near Bartlett Nab viewpoint continues in its development

I spent a lot of my time today at either New Roll Up or Staple Newk viewpoints looking out for and relaying information updates on the Black Browed Albatross (first seen c27th June 2021). Of course, it begged to be photographed and I was happy to oblige!

Could've taken loads of Gannet images, but these were the ones that caught my eye

And finally, some of the views

All images taken handheld with Sony RX10 Mk4.
