Tophill Low - 9th February 2023

Kingfisher

With a good weather forecast, I decided to head down to Tophill Low and enjoyed a wander through the reserve, cool, but bright and sunny. The problem with a sunny morning is that most hides look directly into the sun and/or the glare on the water surface is blinding. With this in mind, I headed to the back to back hides on south marsh in the hope of a Bittern! It was nice to chat with David W who informed me that the Marsh Harriers were showing well. Despite my best efforts, I couldn't locate a Bittern, so enjoyed the Marsh Harriers and a Kingfisher (distant). Curlew also took flight from the nearby River Hull. I needed to stretch my legs so headed back with the plan of visiting north marsh. Here a Kingfisher was more obliging, even aesthetically framing itself on one of the stick posts. The Snowdrops were also amazing and who can resist them? Time for me ran out and I had failed to visit Watton!
