Tophill Low - 18th August 2020

Kingfisher Breakfast

I nearly didn't go! Looking out of the window and...................FOG! Thick, wet, horrible fog! Not a single mention of it on the weather forecasts, nothing new there then! However, I persevered, hoping it would have lifted by the time I arrived at Tophill. Still thick at Driffield and not looking good. Watton faired a little better with brightening sky. As I pulled into the car park you could see the sun and by the time I arrived at North Lagoon Hide it was very atmospheric

Interestingly, when I arrived at 0615hrs, there were no cars in the car park and I didn't see anyone on the reserve until I arrived back in the car park some three hours later!

The reserve appeared quiet with very little on the pools. I sat in the Izzard Hide for quite some time before a Kingfisher appeared! For a good hour, it was just me and two Kingfishers (4 seen throughout the reserve). Perfect!

North Marsh Hide provided me with my first ever Otter in Yorkshire! Not the best of views but I'm happy!

Little Egret

Lapwing

Curlew +

Grey Heron

And finally, walking back to the car park, this Elephant Hawk Moth. Taken with my 300mm 2.8 Canon! I wish I'd got my macro! Next time!

Till next time........................!
