Filey Dams - 7th May 2019

Swallow

My original plan this morning was to walk the Bempton circuit, but heavy rain failed to motivate me, so I headed to the hides at Filey Dams! The weather and light was poor but some good birds were seen, albeit distant, so images are heavily cropped with high ISO. I managed to touch base with Whimbrel, Greenshank and White Wagtail which were year ticks. Interestingly, an adult Kittiwake was on the pool near east hide, and not a bird I expected to see! Swallows and Sand Martins showed well on close tree stumps with many more, plus House Martins skimming the water. Also present but to far for the camera lens were a White Wagtail, Sedge Warbler, Yellow Wagtail and a flyover group of four Ringed Plovers and three Dunlin. There was one Dunlin on the pools. Unfortunately, I missed the two Wood Sandpipers!

Sadly, the new hide was locked today, so I was not able to see inside. Although more work is required, the hide from the outside, looks fantastic and will be a great asset to Filey Dams reserve.
