Ardnamurchan Adventures 20th - 27th May 2019 (Part 4)

American Black Duck

On 16th June 2007, nearly 12 years ago, a drake American Black Duck arrived on Loch Sunart, near the village of Strontian. He has taken it upon himself to remain in residence and mate with female Mallards! Having seen the bird on day 1 of our tour, we returned to Strontian where the bird was showing well, with his female Mallard (including mating!) below the road bridge over the Strontian River. A nice life tick!

Voyeuristic Grey Heron watching the Black Duck mate with his Mallard!

Grey Heron

A walk around the Ariundle woodland gave the opportunity for some butterfly spotting. In particular, the Chequered Skipper which is only found in north west Scotland. This was a photographic challenge for me with my 400mm prime lens - needing to stand back to enable focussing, resulting in members of the group inadvertently walking in front of me!

 Also, Green Veined White

 And male Orange Tip

This ?Wasp nest was spotted below a rock just above the water of the Strontian River
