Turtle Dove
An evening trip to Harwood Dale and Harwood Dale Forest in search of Turtle Doves, Nightjars and Woodcocks. Still bright and mild, we arrived at the Mill Inn, Harwood Dale and waited, and waited and waited! We began to think that we would dip the red listed Turtle Dove and then this one appeared on the wires. Unfortunately, we did not hear its "tuurrrrrrr" song, considered by many to be the song of summer and it is this sound that gives the Turtle Dove its name.
"Can't I have ANY peace?"
Onwards and into the Harwood Dale Forest. Our walk around before dusk did not provide a variety of birds, the best being Crossbill, Willow Warbler, Chiffchaff, Sparrowhawk and Song Thrush. As dusk fell, we headed back to the car for coffee and the wait for Nightjar and Woodcock. Well before the Nightjars started "churring" one had a fly around, giving us our best ever views of this not so common breeding bird. Eventually the churring commenced, a fantastic sound! No Woodcock though and we decided to head home. As we drove the rough forest track, we spotted a Woodcock roding so three out of three of our target birds!
Finally, a Song Thrush belting out its song...
