Bempton Circular Walk - 12th July 2020

Short-eared Owl

A good, early morning walk taking in Bempton, Buckton, Hoddy Cows Lane, Bempton Cliffs, Metlands and back to Bempton - c5.5miles. It was a glorious, sunny morning with blue sky and it felt good to be out. I'm not sure that Symphony would agree! I have to say that the best birding was "off piste" to the cliffs, which even at 0600hrs were busy! It was impossible to get on to some viewpoints, due to unsocial hogging by photographers. They were social distancing but were not prepared to move from their spot, so necessitated a move on for me. So, this morning, very little from the cliffs, but the "off piste" more than made up for it, and not a soul was encountered!

Several Peregrines were seen and heard calling and I managed to get on to this juvenile...

Best bird of the day for me, however, goes to this Short-eared Owl, which caught me by surprise, hunting over Metlands grasslands...

As I say, didn't really get much of a view on the cliffs best were:

Gannets...

Razorbills...

Kittiwakes...

Back to the "off piste"

Meadow Pipit...

Swallow...

"...We all stand together...!" Canada Geese...

Yellowhammer...

Common Whitethroat...

Linnet...

Reed Bunting...

Brown Hare...

And finally, looking into the "Fields of Gold"...
