Bempton Cliffs Walk (Glorious Gannets) - 3rd March 2023

A walk on the cliffs enjoying the glorious Gannets! So interesting at this time of year as pair bonding takes place.

Gannets reuniting!

Gannet pairs have a lifelong bond, but only when on the breeding ledges. Once breeding has occurred, they go on separate journeys and will not see each other until the next breeding season! It is a privilege to witness the birds reuniting.

Looks quite brutal, but nape biting is a sign of  endearment! (This also occurs during copulation).

Mutual fencing is a greeting

"I've really missed you!"

And more fencing

Throughout the breeding season, Gannets will collect mud, seaweed, vegetation and anything that grabs their attention. This "gift" will further establish the pairs bond, and will be placed into the nest.
