Aspects of Bridlington Harbour & Bay (Birds) - 18th March 2023

Kittiwake

It was good to see and hear Kittiwakes in Bridlington today. These pretty little gulls should not be confused with the feisty, chip stealing Herring Gulls! During the day they increased in numbers (although still many more to return). Kittiwakes have a life time loyalty to their partner and return to their same nest site throughout their lifetime. It is a sad reflection on human actions that cause nests to be removed and deterrents such as netting put in place, to prevent them causing "minor" inconvenience to those humans that have no interest in wildlife. Sadly, in the first year of deterrents, the birds probably wont breed and this is worrying as Kittiwakes are red listed and in most danger.
