Thornwick Pool, Flamborough - 22nd August 2019

Juvenile Black Necked Grebe

News came out this morning of a juvenile Black Necked Grebe on Thornwick pool! Unfortunately, I was undertaking the long walk around Buckton and Bempton! Eventually, mid-morning, I arrived at the pools and soon located the uncommon visitor. The Grebe was associating with the Mallards and seemed to be taking advantage of their feeding disturbing the water as it constantly dived around them.

Recently, reports and images of an injured Redshank have been circulating, one query being that the damage has been caused by a hook. Today I was able to get a reasonable close up of the injury and what was assumed to be a hook appears to be part of the plumage. The bird is limping but feeding well.

Also present was a Greenshank

And one of two Dunlin
