Filey Dams - 26th May 2023

Reports started to come in From Filey Dams of two Avocets and a little later of a Squacco Heron!!! The Avocets would be a year tick and the Squacco a life tick! Problem was being unable to visit until mid afternoon. We got there and soon secured the Avocets, and Heather got a tick on a Common Sandpiper. The Squacco Heron, however was now playing hard to see and had taken up a very distant spot on the Dams, but only viewable from the private East Lea Reserve. During the morning, the Squacco had been showing exceptionally well as evidenced by some fantastic flight shots. We went round to East Lea and joined a small group of members in order to obtain a life tick of this rare vagrant. I apologise in advance for the record shots, but it was the best I could do!

Avocets

Coots

Common Sandpiper

Squacco Heron

When I say distant, I mean distant!

A few record shots, but a tick is a tick and it is rare for me to twitch a bird!

Thank you for looking.
