Mid December on Bempton Cliffs - 16th December 2018

Stonechat

After yesterdays gale force winds and heavy rain it was rather pleasant to be greeted on the cliffs with sunshine and blue sky! I arrived on the cliffs early, my intention being to capture the sun rise and I was not to be disappointed with a golden glow flooding the reserve!

A quiet day bird wise with two Barn Owls hunting over Coultas field, three Stonechats, eight Red Throated Divers, two Great Northern Divers, five Shags, forty + Fulmars, and ending with a Short-eared Owl again in Coultas field mid afternoon.

Todays Sightings

First birds of the day were two Barn Owls hunting Coultas field but the light was poor resulting in a distant grainy image of one

Three Stonechats were seen, one on the lower part of the nature trail and a pair near Jubilee Corner viewpoint

Fulmars were perhaps the most noticeable birds on the cliffs, in flight and on the sea

Herring Gull

Most unexpected bird of the day was this Yellowhammer, literally feet from the visitor centre rear doors!
