Thornwick Pool (Amorous Little Ringed Plovers and Egg Eating Moorhen) - 19th June 2023

Little Ringed Plovers

Little Ringed Plovers have eluded me so far this year, so I headed out to Flamborough, Thornwick Pool to hopefully get a year tick. All was quiet after a night of very heavy rain with little bird life on the pool. That is until I spotted a Little Ringed Plover partially hidden by a rock. After a while, a second bird flew in, calling and circling the pool, before landing close to the original bird. I was then treated to a courtship display, before cloacal rubbing, lasting the best part of a minute, followed by both birds splitting up.

Moorhen

Observing two Moorhens on the far side of the pool, I noticed one was carrying an egg, which it proceeded to eat. Moorhens have omnivorous diets and are known to remove eggs that may not be from their own brood. This is the first time I have observed this behaviour.

 And finally, a happy family

A quiet but interesting hour! Images taken with my Canon 7D Mk2 and 400mm 5.6 prime lens.

Thank you for looking.
