Being in the area, we decided to visit Chafer Wood near the village of Ebberston, North Yorkshire. This is a small woodland reserve managed by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust. Disappointingly, it presented as almost devoid of wildlife, a view becoming all to common throughout the UK. Thankfully, a relic known as "King Alfred's Cairn provided some photographic opportunities. The Cairn was built in c1790, marking the place where Alfred king of Northumbria rested after his defeat in 705AD. Alfred was pierced by an arrow after bloody battles in the fields between Ebberston and Allerston, later dying where the cairn is erected, before being taken to Little Driffield for burial. The original cave, below the cairn was excavated in the 1950's with Neolithic remains being found.
