New Years Day 2018 - Scarborough

Mediterranean Gull

Having enjoyed seeing the Desert Wheatear in Whitby, we decided to have a birding wander around Scarborough. Starting at Scalby Mills, a scan of the Gulls produced Great Black Backed, Common, Herring and Black Headed. Also present were Curlew, Oystercatcher and Turnstone.

The Open Air Theatre held two Redshanks and a female Kingfisher. Repair work at the theatre has resulted in the erection of wire safety fencing, beyond which, the Kingfisher showed rather well! I managed to place my camera lens against the wire and capture the Kingfisher, with the images turning out better than I expected!

Peasholm Park was next where a second year Mediterranean Gull had been reported, but not located by us! I was quite taken by this Tufted Duck, particularly the reflection and ripples.

This Grey Heron seemed completely at ease with the many visitors nearby

It was our intention to visit Scarborough Harbour to tick off the reported "sod all's and bugger all's" reported by local birders but it was so busy with no parking spaces, we gave it a miss!

Our last stop was at Holbeck for the Mediterranean Gulls, with at least six present

Not a bad start to the 2018 birding list!

Happy New Year!
