RSPB Bempton Cliffs

Guillemots

Volunteering today at RSPB Bempton Cliffs saw me manning the Grandstand viewpoint. I had a strange feeling as I walked down the path from the visitor centre that today would see thousands of Auks on the cliffs and Puffins in abundance! My dream was soon shattered as it was a struggle with only a handful of Razorbills and Guillemots on the cliffs, numerous rafts on the sea but NO visible Puffins! Such a disappointment for our visitors, but that is nature! The cliffs held many Gannets, Kittiwakes and Fulmar and a report came through of a flushed Long Eared Owl in the dell, taking flight towards the derelict RAF station. Gues who didn't see it? The weather was good which compensated (a little) for the lack of Auks. Maybe next week?

Probably my best bird sighting of the day was a Swallow on Cliff Lane, Bempton, this evening, while walking the dog! My first of the year!
