Scarborough Area - 31st January 2019

Drake Gadwall Seamer Tip Pool

Thursday is becoming a regular opportunity to bird around Scarborough and give Symphony a good walk. Having dropped Heather at Scarborough indoor market (great bargains on greetings cards including some of my photographic images made into cards!), I headed for the harbour. Managed a few sunrise images.

Unfortunately nothing showing bird wise, so I headed down to Scalby Mills. No sign of the Dipper today, but a Grey Wagtail showed well on the beck

A few of the Wigeon showed well

I decided to walk through the Open Air Theatre where two Roe Deer fed behind the stage area

The water around the reed bed was well frozen and workmen were cutting the reeds back so no birds here! A walk around Peasholm Park again revealed frozen water with a small area a free water holding the expected wild fowl.

The well known Peregrine observation area on North Marine Drive produced one bird

I needed to pick up some dog food so this gave me the opportunity to look around the Seamer Road retail park. The trees still have plenty of berries but no Waxwings took advantage of this feast and only one Mistle Thrush patrolled its territory.

Next stop was Seamer Tip Pool which was also frozen with a small area of free water holding Tufted Ducks, Mallards, Gadwalls and Mute Swans. At the beginning of the year I set myself a task to see 100 birds in January. I reached the task with 103 but could I add to this? Well yes, winter thrushes have been few in number and today I managed to see one Fieldfare, one Redwing and one Song Thrush in a field together, so I end January with 105!

Redwing with Song Thrush

Gadwall are very overlooked Ducks, but they are one of my favourites

I tried to take some "reflective" images but the birds didn't see that as a priority! This one of a Coot is the best I could get!

The morning could be summed up as "cold and frosty", portrayed in these final images near Seamer Tip Pool.
