North Yorkshire 29th May - 5th June 2010

Have you missed me?...............................No, I thought not!

Well, we have just had a "family" holiday in North Yorkshire, staying on Humble Bee Farm, about five miles west of Filey. I say a family holiday because we visited a number of the normal tourist attractions as my 14yr old daughter does not do "bird watching", "uncool" apparently!. However, I was allowed out with a pass for (?) good  behaviour, and of course, carried my camera at all times (just in case!).

The weather was mixed, with a combination of hot sunshine, rain and the inevitable sea mists that follow these two. Not good for images - the sea mist obviously clouded some opportunities and the hot, bright sunshine caused problems getting the exposure right (which I didn't!). Oh well, who said it would be easy (and I like a challenge - not!).

Worst part of the holiday for me was my RBA texting service informing me of a Woodchat Shrike for several days at Filey Old Tip. Well, I asked everyone with "bins" (optical & rubbish!) and many locals if they knew of its location, and drew a total blank, only to find out its location while talking to a guy on Bempton Cliffs, several days after the bird had gone! So still a "bogey" bird for me! (Still kicking myself for missing the Brandon bird last year!)

Still, not a bad week with 77 bird species (See list at end of post).

  2. Thanks, Max. Problem with trips like this is sorting all of the images at the end - took me a whole day! Shame about the Spotted Flycatchers, hope they reappear soon.
